Partnerships
for sustainable development - voluntary, multi-stakeholder initiatives aimed at
implementing sustainable development and contributing to the
implementation of Agenda 21, Rio +5 and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation
(JPOI) - were an important complementary outcome of the World Summit on
Sustainable Development (WSSD). At its 11th Session in May 2003, the Commission
on Sustainable Development (CSD) reaffirmed that these partnerships contribute
to the implementation of intergovernmental commitments, recognizing that
partnerships are a complement to, not a substitute for, intergovernmental
commitments.

The CSD Partnerships Fair provides a venue
for registered Partnerships for Sustainable Development to showcase progress,
launch new partnerships, network with existing and potential partners, create
synergies between partnerships and learn from each other's experiences. The
Partnerships Fair gives CSD participants an opportunity to gather information on
and discuss the valuable contribution of these important initiatives towards
supporting the implementation of inter-governmentally agreed sustainable
development goals and objectives.
The Partnerships Fair is an official part of the CSD and a summary of its
activities will be included in the Report of CSD 17. A more detailed account of
the Partnerships Fair Activities will also be available on-line through the CSD
Secretariat’s daily Partnerships Wires.
The CSD 17 Partnerships Fair will take place at
UN Headquarters in New York from
4 to 8 May 2009.
The Programme of activities will mainly feature:
-
Partnerships working sessions: These
sessions aim at generating a more interactive, candid and dynamic
dialogue and exchanges of views among leading-edge thinkers,
practitioners and experts on issues related to the use of
partnerships to implement sustainable development. Working sessions
will take place in the CSD Partnerships Fair room, conference room
6.
-
Partnership training sessions:
Interactive sessions that offer valuable tools, resources, examples
and practical experiences on establishing, developing and
maintaining effective partnerships as collaborative mechanisms for
more effective delivery of sustainable development goals and
objectives. Training sessions will take place in the CSD
Partnerships Fair room, conference room 6.
-
Partnerships Information Desks: A
small number of desks are available to CSD registered partnerships
to display and distribute information related to their partnership
and be available to discuss their work with CSD-17 delegates. The
desks will be located in the ‘neck area’ (situated in the corridor
between the Vienna Café and the elevators in the 1st basement of the
Conference Building at UN-HQ).
